Before WWII
Stalin became dictator of the Sovjet Union in 1935.
He killed many high ranking officers. So he weakend the army.
He did not trust Hitler, but he knew the Sovjet Union was to weak to fight Germany.

A pact...
Hitler and Stalin made an pact. They wouldn't attack each other.
The pact was called the
Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.
Named after the ministers who signed the deal.
But Hitler still hated communists and Stalin did not trust Hitler.

Betrayal
In June 1941 Hitler started
operation Barbarossa.
It was the attack on the Sovjet Union.
Hitler needed the resources (oil, coal and iron) and he hated the communists.
At first the German army went through the Sovjet Union easily.
But in Stalingrad the German army was defeated at the start of 1943.

Germany devided.
At the end of the war, when it became clear that the Gemans would lose, the allies had a meeting.
After WW II Germany would be split up, and so would Berlin.
Deviding Germany and founding the
United Nations
would be enough to stop another war from breaking out.
