Before WWII
  • Stalin became dictator of the Sovjet Union in 1935.
  • He killed many high ranking officers. So he weakend the army.
  • He did not trust Hitler, but he knew the Sovjet Union was to weak to fight Germany.

A pact...
  • Hitler and Stalin made an pact. They wouldn't attack each other.
  •  The pact was called the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. Named after the ministers who signed the deal.
  • But Hitler still hated communists and Stalin did not trust Hitler.

Betrayal
  • In June 1941 Hitler started operation Barbarossa. It was the attack on the Sovjet Union.
  • Hitler needed the resources (oil, coal and iron) and he hated the communists.
  • At first the German army went through the Sovjet Union easily.
  • But in Stalingrad the German army was defeated at the start of 1943.

Germany devided.
  • At the end of the war, when it became clear that the Gemans would lose, the allies had a meeting.
  • After WW II Germany would be split up, and so would Berlin.
  • Deviding Germany and founding the United Nations would be enough to stop another war from breaking out.
