When to use what? 
Past simple: 
- an activity started in the past and is now over. 
- Often used with time indication. Yesterday, a month/year ago, date etc.  (remember LADY)
Present perfect = 
- an activity which started in the past and is still going on OR is still relevant today.
- Often used with signal words such as 'since, until, yet, for'.
