Metropolis means Metropool.
A metropolis is in fact a giant city with lots of residents (=inwoners).
Examples are Tokio (Japan -  40 million residents) and Delhi (India - 27 million residents).
Almelo 'only' has 75.000 residents and Amsterdam has 900.000 residents. Tokio has over 40 times as many residents!
