Future in the past  wb. p. 111
  • was/were going to --> plans, intentions, predictions                                                =  I was going to find him, however long it took
  • would + infinitive --> future possibilities, predictions or events that took      place, but not definite plans                                                                                                 = A week later she would finally catch the criminal
  • was/were + verb + ing --> arrangements that were made, it was planned and decided                                                                                                                                   =They had decided that they were meeting in town later that day to investigate the crime.

Future in the past with 'to + infinitive':

  • was/were to --> events that took place or were expected to happen                                                                                                         = She was to search for him relentlessly
  • was/were + about to --> an event that was in the very near future, or to describe an event that was interrupted                         = He was about to leave the bar when he turned and saw her.
  • Be bound to --> to describe sth. that was likely to happen           = I waited a bit longer, as she was bound to arrive any minute.
  • Be due to --> to describe sth. that was scheduled to happen     = We were due to meet the suspect.

  • would + be + verb + ing --> plan or event in progress at a future time                                                                                                 = Within a few days she would be leaving for good.
  • would + have + past participle --> an event that would be completed in the future                                                                         = By the following week I'd have found the killer.
  • would + have been + verb + ing --> an action that would continue up to a certain time                                                                 = I'd thought we would have been searching for the gunman for a long time, but we caught him the next day.
