  •  Students will be able to form clear and accurate sentences using hyphenated words.
  • Students will increase their vocabulary by learning new words and understanding their meanings and usage in context.

Hyphenated words
Today, we are going to work with hyphenated words. These are compound words that use a hyphen (-) to combine two words and create a new meaning.
Example:
Self-assured: Confident in oneself.
Top-notch: Excellent; of the highest quality.

Activity one
You will work in teams of 3-4 students.
Each team gets a mini whiteboard and a marker.
I will read a sentence with a missing word, like:
“The hotel we stayed in was __________.”
Quickly discuss which hyphenated word completes the sentence, like “top-notch.”
Write the correct hyphenated word on your whiteboard and hold it up when you’re ready.

Activity two
Today, we are going to practice the vocabulary from Lesson 1.4 through a fun and competitive activity. You will work in teams and use your mini whiteboards again.
You will be divided in groups of 3-4 again but in different groups now.

Rules
I will say a word from the list in Lesson 1.4, for example, "accomplishment" or "temporary."
Quickly discuss with your team and write the definition of the word and a sentence with that word  on your mini whiteboard.
Once your team is ready, hold up your whiteboard.
The first team with the correct answer earns a point.
After each word, erase your whiteboard for the next round.
