Indirect vs. Direct Speech

Direct:        Paul said: "I am going on a holiday next week."
Indirect:    Paul said that he was going on a holiday next week.

Direct:        Anna said: "I like your new hair."
Indirect:    Anna said that she liked my new hair.

Indirect speech = vertellen wat iemand eerder gezegd heeft.

Alles gaat een tijd terug:

Simple present wordt simple past        I visit - I visited

Simple past  wordt past perfect            I visited - I had visited

Present perfect wordt past perfect     I have visited - I had visited

Indirect speech

Persoonlijke voornaamwoorden en tijdsbepalingen veranderen:

Net als in het Nederlands.

"Ik zag jouw vader vorige week fietsen."

Hij zei dat hij mijn vader een week eerder had zien fietsen.

Examples

Joey: "My brother is going to pick us up."

Joey said that his brother was going to pick us up.

Alex: "I hate Geography."
Alex said that he hated Geography.

Said vs. told:

Als je wilt aangeven tegen wie iemand iets heeft gezegd gebruik je "told":

"Sonia told me that you were in hospital." 
"What did you tell the police?" 

In alle andere gevallen gebruik je "said" (of "said to")

David: "My mother works at a bank."
David said that _________________ .

Alex: "I really like your new bag."
Alex said that ____________________ , and he
bought the same one.

Bob: "I hate my new job."
Bob said that ____________________ .

Robert: "I want to go to London tomorrow."
Robert said that ___________ .

Lisa: "My mum will drive us to school."
Lisa said that ________________ and she was
waiting outside my house right on time.

Joey: "I drove to Madrid last year."
Joey said that __________________ .
