If / When & Conditionals

If.... then....

If /when- interchangeable

If /when: are interchangeable when dealing with truth/general knowledge/ facts ('telkens als')

- If/when you put snow in the sun, it melts.

- If/when you are ill, you should see a doctor.

- If/when I drop my pen, gravity pulls at it. 

If/when: the difference

If: not certain

When: certainty

- If I feel better next week, I will visit you.

(het is niet zeker dat ik me volgende week beter voel)

- When I feel better, I will visit you. 

(ik weet zeker dat ik je bezoek als ik beter ben)

Compare: if vs. when

Compare:

I’ll call you when the plane lands.                                  = normal sentence

I’m confident that the plane will land as expected

I’ll call you if the plane lands.                                          = cause for panic!

It’s 50/50 whether the plane will land or not!

(if/when) it rains tomorrow, we can't have a picnic.

What is the difference between these sentences?

1. If I study hard, I will pass my exam.

2. If I studied hard, I would pass my exam.

3. If I had studied hard, I would have passed my exam. 

Conditionals

• Zero conditional: general truths

 

if / (when)	then
present simple	present simple
If/ when people don't eat ,	they die.
If / when you heat up water to 100 degrees,	it boils .

Conditionals

• First conditional: outcome is likely to happen

 

If	then
Present Simple	will/won't + infinitive
	modal verb with future meaning (shall/should/will/would/can/could/may/might)
If you don't study	you will fail the test.
When I'm in London	I will visit Tower of London.

never in the  'IF' clause

• Second conditional: outcomes are unlikely to happen or unrealistic

 

if	then
past simple	would + infinitive modal verb with future-in-the-past meaning (should/would/might/could)
If it snowed in July,	would you go skiing ?
If I won the lottery,	I would buy a car.

WOULD/WOULDN't are in the main clause

Conditionals

• Third conditional: circumstances would be different if something different had happened in the past. 

If	then
past perfect	would have + past participle modal verb with future-in-the-past meaning (should/would/might/could) + have + -ed form
If I had won the lottery,	I would have bought a car.

1. She'll miss the bus if she doesn't leave soon.

Pick the Second Conditional sentence.

1. If Julie doesn't wear a hat, she gets sunstroke.
2. If Julie wears a hat, she will be protected from the sun.
3. If Julie wore a hat, she wouldn't get sunstroke.
4. If Julie had worn a hat, she wouldn't have gotten sunstroke.
