Need to know 1.6 The Dutch landscape below sea level
You can mention a number of measures people in the Dutch landscape below sea level have taken to protect themselves against the water.
You can explain how the Dutch landscape below sea level got covered with peat and clay.
You can mention some characterisics of the Dutch landscape below sea level (e.g. polders, parcellation (=verkaveling), tidal flats)
Slide 3 - Slide
Formation of peat
In the Netherlands below sea level, new soil types were deposited during the period of the rising sea level.
The beaches and dunes were formed by the sea.
Behind the dunes was a marshland, here a layer of peat was formed.
Slide 4 - Slide
Formation of peat
About 1000 years B.C. a new beach ridge formed along the coast.
Behind the beach ridge tidal flats were formed. In these tidal flats the water often stood still and clay was deposited.
When openings appeared in the dunes, the sea water came behind the dunes again and a layer of peat was formed.
Slide 5 - Slide
Need to know 1.5 The Dutch landscape above sea level
You can explain why the soil in the Dutch ladscape above sea level is infertile and how it is made suitable for agriculture.
You can describe how the relief in the Dutch landscape above sea level was formed and how erratic boulders were left behind.
You can indicate the Dutch landscape above sea level on a topographical map.
Slide 6 - Slide
Need to know 1.4 What happens to all the river gravel, sand and clay?
You can describe how sandbanks, dunes and deltas are formed.
You can desribe how sedimentary rock is formed in a plain.
You can mention a number of characteristics of sedimentary rock.
Slide 7 - Slide
Need to know 1.3 Rock is moved
You know what mass movement is.
You can explain by using the terms 'weathering' and 'erosion' how river gravel, sand and clay are formed.
You know the difference between a V-shaped valley and an U-shaped valley.
Slide 8 - Slide
Need to know 1.2 Rock changes
You can describe the difference between mechanical and chemical weathering.
You can explain how three types of mechanical weathering occur.
You can explain how caves are formed as a consequence of chemical weathering.
Slide 9 - Slide
Need to know 1.1 Mountains are formed, mountains wear down
You know the differences betwenn a young and an old mountain range.
You can desribe how mountains are formed using the words 'ocean floor' and 'volcanism'
You can recognize fossils and igneous rock on a photo.
Slide 10 - Slide
What do you need to study?
The (key)terms on page 27 of the textbook
Make sure you can answer the learning objectives as stated in this lesson
Study your textbook AND LessonUp presentations
Just browsing through the book is not enough, you have to read closely and understand what the text says.
