We use 'the' for something specific:

I'm talking about a specific key that opens a specific lock.

We us 'a/an' for things that are not specific:
This is a key, it opens a lock.
I'm talking about any key, and any lock. It is not specific.

Why is it
A house, a cloud, a teacher and a cat. 
But
An apple, an eye, an owl and an ice cream?

We use 'a' for words that start with a vowel: A, O, U, I, E.

We use 'an' for words that start with a consonant: B, C, D, K, L, M, T, P, etc. etc.

Vowel = klinker
Consonant = medeklinker
