Adjectives

Een adjective is in het Nederlands een bijvoeglijk naamwoord.

Je gebruikt een adjective om een zelfstandig naamwoord te omschrijven.

>Voorbeelden:

o John is a good player.

o She lives in a nice house.

o The chef uses a sharp knife.

o It will be a cold winter.

o I drive a fast car.

Waar staat het bijvoeglijk naamwoord in de zin?

Het bijvoeglijk naamwoord staat meestal vlak voor het zelfstandig naamwoord dat het omschrijft. Voorbeeld: A red apple

Bijvoeglijke naamwoorden kunnen ook achter het werkwoord “to be” staan:

The knife is sharp.

The weather was terrible.

Beide kunnen ook gecombineerd worden. Voorbeeld: The small knife is sharp.

Adverbs

Een adverb is in het Nederlands een bijwoord.

Bijwoorden geven meer informatie over een ander woord. Zij geven meer informatie over een werkwoord, 

een bijvoeglijk naamwoord 

en een ander bijwoord.

Soms geven ze aan hoe vaak iets gebeurt (bv. never), waar iemand is (bv. outside), op welke manier iets gebeurt (bv. quickly) etc.

Bijvoeglijk naamwoord + ly

Je vormt een bijwoord door meestal -ly achter een bijvoeglijk naamwoord te plakken.

Let op! De spelling, hieronder een aantal voorbeelden:

Reguliere vorm nice – nicely

Stam eindigt op -e: min -e plus -ly terrible – terribly

Stam eindigt op medeklinker +y: min -y plus -ily easy – easily

Stam eindigt op -ic: min -ic plus -ically fantastic – fantastically

Uitzonderingen van adverbs

Het bijwoord van good is well.

Sommige bijwoorden komen voor in dezelfde vorm als het bijvoeglijk naamwoord:

Fast snel

Hard hard

Late laat

Fair schappelijk / eerlijk

Near dichtbij

High hoog

Straight recht

Wrong fout

Uitzondering op de regel

Na de werkwoorden to be, to seem, to feel, to look, to smell, to sound en to taste gebruik je geen bijwoord, maar een bijvoeglijk naamwoord.

>Voorbeeld: 

This is easy. 

He seems nice. 

You look beautiful.
