Slide 1 - Slide

Lesson goals
  • Students will improve their understanding and use of past simple, present perfect, irregular verbs, and time expressions through interactive game-based activities.
  •  Students will be able to correctly identify and use different verb tenses in sentences, focusing on accurate verb forms and time markers.
  • Students will enhance their vocabulary by reviewing and applying words from Lesson 1.4, including their definitions and usage in sentences.

Activity one
Today, we are going to play a Jeopardy!-style grammar game where you will practice using past simple, present perfect, irregular verbs, and time expressions. You will work in groups to answer grammar questions, and each correct answer will earn your team points.
Instructions:
Split the class into groups of 4.  Each group will receive a mini whiteboard with a marker.
The game is divided into four categories: Past Simple, Present Perfect, Irregular Verbs, and Time Expressions.
Each category has questions worth 10, 20, and 30 points.
10 points: Easier questions
20 points: Medium-level questions
30 points: Harder questions

Slide 3 - Slide

How the Game Works:
Each team will take turns choosing a category and a point value (e.g., "We choose Present Perfect for 20 points").
You take out the paper with the questions, and  your team will answer. You have 30 seconds to write your answer on the whiteboard.
When time is up, hold up your whiteboard, and I will check your answer.

Example Questions:
For Past Simple: "What is the past simple form of to go?" (Answer: went)
This would be worth 10 points, as it is a basic question asking for a common irregular verb in the past simple form.

For Present Perfect: "Fill in the blank: They ________ (to live) here for 5 years." (Answer: have lived)
This would also be worth 10 points, since it’s a straightforward fill-in-the-blank question requiring the present perfect tense for a common verb.

You will be divided in groups of 4 but with different pupils now.

Rules
I will say a word from the list in Lesson 1.4, for example, "consentt" or "longevity."
Quickly discuss with your team and write the definition of the word and a sentence with that word  on your mini whiteboard.
Once your team is ready, hold up your whiteboard.
The first team with the correct answer earns a point.
After each word, erase your whiteboard for the next round.

Slide 9 - Slide

You have 10 minutes to review the words and definitions from Lesson 1.4. Use your books or notes to fully understand the words. After that, the competition will begin!
