Relative Pronouns
'Relative Pronouns' gebruik je als je extra informatie wilt geven over iets of iemand met behulp van een bijzin.

Relative Pronouns
'who' --> om te verwijzen naar mensen
'This is my best friend, who lives next door.'


'which' --> om te verwijzen naar dieren of dingen
'This is my bike, which is very old.'

'whose' --> om aan te geven bij wie of wat iets hoort

'That's the friend, whose bike was stolen.'
'That's the bike, whose wheel disappeared.'

Relative Pronouns
'that' --> kan je in plaats van 'who' of 'which' gebruiken, BEHALVE als de bijzin met een komma begint.
(nooit 'that' na een komma)

'That's the friend that /who lives in Swansea.'
'That's the bike that / which is for sale.'

Onderstaande zin heeft comma's en dus mag je hier geen that gebruiken
In deze kun je de bijzin which is published in London ook weglaten. 
The Times ,which is published in London, is a daily newspaper.

  • de bijzin/relative clause kun je weglaten.
  • komma in de zin.

  • Hier is 'who was slightly injured' essentieel om duidelijk te maken over welke Sophie het gaat en kan niet worden weggelaten. 
  • who mag je vervangen door that
  • Geen komma's in de zin!
