Past Simple
Use: for events that started in the past and are over (finished). We often know when it happened specifically.

Form: Regular verbs verb+ed > cooked / watched / cleaned
Irregular verbs own form > ate / saw / went

Look at p. 13 in your Grammar booklet for exceptions in spelling on regular verbs.

Slide 6 - Slide

Past Simple
We always use a helping verb (to do) in the past tense for negations and questions.

Negations (-) > did + not + verb
e.g.: I didn't go to school yesterday.

Questions (?) > Did ... + verb
e.g.:  Did you go to school yesterday?

Slide 7 - Slide

Past Simple
Keywords/Time expressions: give us information on when it took place. These belong to the past simple and are very time specific:

yesterday, the day before yesterday, last week/night/month/year, (earlier) this morning, ago, in (2011), when, etc.

Slide 8 - Slide

Past Continuous
Use: 1. events that were taking place for a periode of time in the past. It's also finished. 2. an event in the past that got interrupted by another event. 3. two events that were taking place at the same time (in the past).
Form: to be (was/were) + verb+ing

1. I was studying for a test earlier.
2. I was cooking dinner yesterday, when the delivery guy rang the doorbell.
3. I was eating while my mom was doing the cleaning up.
