Clauses of Purpose

Used to show intention or goal. - Common Structures:
  • To + verb → She studies hard to pass the exam.
  • For (the purpose of) + gerund → He spoke slowly for the purpose of helping us understand.
  • So that + clause → I left early so that I wouldn’t be late.
  • in order to + inf. -> I went to university in order to get a degree

Used to explain why something happens.
Common Structures:
  • Because + clause → He was tired because he worked late.
  • Since + clause → Since it was raining, we stayed inside.
  • As + clause → As she didn’t study, she failed the test.
  • Also: because of, due to, on account of, as a result of +noun
