When do we use a/an?
When we talk about something for the first time:
'Once upon a time there was
a princess...

When we talk about someone's job or role:
'She is
an astronaut.
' / 'He is a father.'

We use 'a' before words that start with a 'consonant' (=medeklinker) sound.

We use 'an' before words that start with a 'vowel' (=klinker) sound.

When do we use 'the'?
When we mention something the second (or a later) time:
'...The princess lived in a huge castle.'
When we talk about a particular group of things or people:
'The teachers at this school really need a vacation'
When we talk about unique objects:

Names, cities, (most) countries and continents:
Elizabeth, London, Turkey, Africa.
When talking about uncountable/abstract things:
Love, motivation, pain.
When talking about things or people in general:
'It's good to eat vegetables / Cats are usually lazy'
This is called
'zero article'
