Paraphrasing & Creative writing

Being able to write the same thing using different words and expressions is a very useful skill and shows your ability to express yourself in English. Try the following exercises to practise.

For each question, complete the second sentence so that it means the same as the first.

Use no more than three words.

1. The bus station is near the new shopping centre.
The bus station isn't ........................................ the new shopping centre.

2. I've never been to this shop before.
This is ........................................ I've been in this shop.

3. The choice of food here is not as good as in the market.
The choice of food in the market ........................................ here.

4. There is late-night shopping on Thursday.
The shops ........................................ on Thursday.

5. Shall we go into town this afternoon?
Would ........................................ go into town this afternoon?

6. My friend suggested travelling by train.
My friend said 'If I were you ........................................ travel by train'.

7. The tickets were more expensive than I had expected.
The tickets weren't ........................................ as I had expected.

For & Since

We use 'for' and 'since' to talk about the passing of time but do you know the difference between them?

Look at these sentences. Pay attention to the words in bold and try to work out when we use 'for' and when we use 'since'. 

I studied Spanish for 3 years.

We've lived here since we got married.

I haven't seen Steve since last summer.

A) He hasn't played well ___________ a few weeks now.

C) Steve hasn't smoked ________ the baby was born.

B) It hasn't stopped raining _________ we left the house.

D) I've been doing homework ___________ three hours.

We use FOR to mean a period of time, such as 'for a few weeks' or 'for three hours'. We use SINCE to mean from a point in the past to a time later.

Write a story! 

You are going to write a story. First think of a genre. Use at least 100 words for your story or write a poem. It's up to you.  However, you must use the words 'For'and 'Since'at least once AND your story must begin with this sentence:

When I got on the train I found a seat and sat down.
