IF - zinnen of conditionals: grammar 13, p. 89/97
Een if-zin bestaat uit twee gedeelten: het gedeelte dat begint met ‘if’ (if he runs)- de voorwaarde, en het hoofdgedeelte van de zin (he will be on time). Het maakt geen verschil of je de zin met het hoofdgedeelte laat beginnen of met if.

Het gaat hierbij om gewoontes en feiten die waar zijn en zeer waarschijnlijk dat de voorwaarde behaald wordt.

Second conditional

Gebruik: als het gaat over iets wat niet  waarschijnlijk is dat het ooit zal gebeuren/ iets in je fantasie, nu of in de toekomst.


Vorm: if + past simple, would + hele werkwoord

If she owned a dog, she would go outside more often.


If  I knew Daniel was leaving us, I would be so sad!

If you bought that car, you would not have to go by bus to work!

UITZONDERING: 
Als het werkwoord  in je "if-zin" is "to be", dan gebruik je  "I were" in plaats van "I was".
If I were there, I  would make my point.

Gebruik: als het gaat over iets dat absoluut niet gebeurd is in het verleden  / fictieve situatie in het verleden dat tot een andere uitkomst zou hebben geleid.
Vorm: if+ past perfect, could/would have + voltooid deelwoord (3e rij)
If I had seen you, I would have said hello.
We could have been on time, if we had left earlier.
