Past Simple - verb+ed
The Past Simple Tense is used to refer to actions that were completed in a time period before the present time. In the Simple Past the process of performing the action is not important. What matters is that the action was completed in the past. The action may have been in the recent past or a long time ago
I walked home yesterday

Past Continuous - was/were + verb+ ing
The past continuous describes actions or events in a time before now, which began in the past and were still going on when another event happened
I was walking in the park when my mum called me
The children were doing their homework when I got home
Last week, as I was driving to work, my favourite song came on the radio
