Als je wilt zeggen dat iets mag of niet mag (can't/cannot)

Bijvoorbeeld:

You can borrow my pen

You can't use my bike because I need it myself

Ook feitjes: I can count to ten. He can drive really well. 

Can / Could

Je gebruikt "can" en "could" om te vragen of iets mag.

"Could" is altijd beleefder dan "can"

Bijvoorbeeld:

Can we eat pizza tonight?

Could I borrow your pen (please)?

"Could" kun je ook gebruiken voor mogelijkheden
(zou kunnen):

Bijvoorbeeld:

We zouden pizza kunnen bestellen als je niet wilt koken.
We could order pizza if you don't want to cook. 

To be able to 

Als je wilt zeggen dat je ergens toe in staat was.

Bijvoorbeeld:

I was able to play football
 (but not anymore because I broke my leg)

My mother  and father were able to read small letters
 (but not anymore because they need glasses)

PRESENT PERFECT

Gebruik Present Perfect:
1. iets is in het verleden begonnen en is nu nog aan de gang.
2. iets is in het verleden gebeurd en je merkt nu nog het resultaat.

Voorbeelden:

1. I have lived in New York for seven years now.

    Ik woon al zeven jaar in New York. --> in het verleden begonnen en nog steeds bezig.

2. I have painted the door.

     Ik heb de deur geschilderd. --> in het verleden gedaan en je merkt nu nog resultaat.
