Unit 5
This unit is all about technology: you will read, speak and write about it and listen to it. Apart from tech vocab you will learn how to apply phrasal verbs. The grammar of this unit is focussed on relative clauses. You will also practise with CAE Listening part 1, Speaking parts 3 and 4 and UoE part 4.

Defining
Non-defining

Slide 7 - Slide

So, with defining relative clauses
We get essential information about a person, object, situation, etc. Without it the sentence wouldn't make any sense.

Characteristics:
1. No commas used on either side of the clause.
2. accompanied by relative pronouns: who, which, whose, where, when, why.
3. who and which can be replaced by that.
4. who, which and that can be omitted when they are the object (lijdend vw).

Slide 8 - Slide

So, with non-defining relative clauses
We get extra information about a known person, object, situation, etc.

Characteristics:
1. Commas used on either side of the clause.
2. accompanied by relative pronouns: who, which, whose, where, when.
3. who and which can NOT be replaced by that.
4. who, which and that can NOT be omitted when they are the object
(lijdend vw).

  1. Peter, wiens fiets gisteren gestolen werd, heeft een probleem, dat alleen opgelost kan worden door Thomas. Peter, whose bike was/got stolen yesterday, has a problem that can only be solved by Thomas.
  2. De vrouw, aan wie deze brief gestuurd is, is de vrouw van de burgermeester van de stad Zwolle. The woman to whom this letter was sent/has been sent is the wife of the mayor of the city of Zwolle.
  3. De dikke kat van de buren, die gisteren niet uit de boom durfde te komen, moest gered worden door een brandweerman die van katten hield. The neighbours' fat cat, who didn't dare to get down from/out of the tree yesterday, needed to be rescued by a firefighter who loved cats.

Dear students,
I'm sure you can work with modal verbs already, as you must have become masters of this grammar topic after more than three years of TTO-education. So, you probably needn't spend too much time on it. You may take a quick peek at the grammar theory on page 209 in order to confirm my belief. If you happen to see a few items that are still unfamiliar, then you'd better read everything through more thoroughly. If you've never heard of modal verbs before (you might have missed all previous classes on this topic over the past three years due to massive illness), then you must do all grammar exercises on page 209 and pages 70+71. The rest of you are allowed to attend to your week task.
