Ireland

Ierland is het op twee na grootste eiland van Europa, en wordt voornamelijk omringd door de Atlantische Oceaan, behalve aan de oostzijde van het eiland, waar de Ierse Zee ligt. Het eiland ligt ten westen van het eiland Groot-Brittannië. 

- hoofdstad = Dublin

- grootste steden = Cork - tweede grootste stad van Ierland en Galway - gezellige studentenstad in het Westen.

- Ierland is in 2004 overgestapt op het metrische systeem. Verkeersborden geven sindsdien de afstand in kilometers. 

- Het nationale symbool van Ierland is een harp.

- Halloween ontstond in Ierland.

- Dublin werd door Vikingen gesticht.

- Ierland heeft 7 keer gewonnen op het Eurovisie Songfestival.

- ’s Werelds oudste werkende vuurtoren staat in Ierland.

Irish leprechauns

Irish children grow up with stories about leprechauns. 

Leprechauns are very small. 

They live under the ground in the countryside in Ireland. 

They like to make music and tell jokes. 

The word leprechaun means shoemaker in Gaelic. 

The stories say that if you see a rainbow, you will find a pot of gold at the end!

Leprechauns Spotted on the Beach!

A fifteen-year-old spotted something strange at the beach. In an interview he tells us what happened. 

‘I am walking home and I hear two voices on the beach. I walk over there to take a look, and see two figures dressed in green. They are wearing brown shoes. Suddenly they see me and they get up and run away. I go down to take a closer look and see that they forgot their pipe. I take it and bring it home. My mum hides it away safely in the kitchen drawer. The next morning I want to take the pipe to school to show it to my friends, but it is gone! The little men must have come to take it away!’
