To talk about habits and facts in the past.

  • Talk --> Talked
  • Play --> Played

When do you use the past continuous and how do you make it?

Past continuous
To talk about things that were happening for some time in the past (duration)
  • I was screaming
  • You were talking
  • She was reading

Past continuous + past simple
A sudden interruption of an action in the past:
  • I was brushing my teeth when she called me
  • The dog was playing with the ball when it popped
  • They were reading the paragraph when the teacher looked at them

Past perfect + past simple
To talk about more actions that happened in the past; past perfect gebruik je voor wat het langst geleden is en de past simple voor de actie daarna.
  • As soon as we had finished our drinks, we went to school.
  • Before they went to the city, they had finished the game. 
  • Right after he had shouted to me, he ran away.
