  • cities disapeared
  • no strong kings
  • conclusion: most people became farmers again (agrarian society)

  • Farmers seek protection with a more powerful farmer
  • His domain is called a manor
  • Three parts:
  • - demesne: here lives the lord of the manor
  • - farm holdings: here lived the small farmers
  • - wasteland: forests, marshes and rivers

the lord:
- protected the peasants

The peasants:

- most of them become serfs, some of them are free farmers
