How to understand a text (picking it apart)

1. Before reading; look at the title and ask yourself 1, 2 or three questions.

I.e: What type of text is this?
What do I already know?

2. read through the text and try to answer these questions;  underline any words you do not know.

3. look up the words that were once unfamiliar.
