Some animal species died out in the past. Think about the Dodo bird. The Dodo bird used to live on the island of Mauritius (an island next to Madagascar in the Indian Ocean). Also, a lot of other animal species have been threatened by humans (people build cities and towns which destroy animal habitat or hunt animals for their meat). In order to gain an overview of their conservation status (status van behoud). They use different classifications to get an idea how much the animal species is threatened.
