Aims
After this week's lesson you have practised how to:

  • use adverbs correctly in your writing.
  • write a description of the plot of a book or film (B1)
  • write a short review of a book or film (B2)

Writing
  • 4 main parts of speech 
  • noun = zelfstandig naamwoord (people, places, things)
  • verb = werkwoord (write, walk, talk)
  • adjective = bijvoegelijk naamwoord ( blue, beautiful, small)
  • adverb = bijwoord (slowly, sometimes, tomorrow)

Adverbs in writing
"to convey a clear meaning and place your sentence in a particular context"

Dana is an emotional person.
Dana is an overly emotional person.

Jacky visits her grandmother.
Jacky rarely visits her grandmother.

Adverbs of frequency (how often) before the main verb.
Foxes rarely appear in the daytime.

But after: be, auxiliary verbs (be/ do/have), modal verbs (can/could/ should/must/might)

My boss is often late for work.
I have never watched a rugby match.
You should always be polite to elderly people.

Occassionally, usually, normally, often, frequently,  sometimes also at the beginning or end of sentences.

Adverbs of manner (how) after the verb.

Foxes run fast.
Lions move slowly and silently.
She speaks Russian fluently. (after the object)

Adverbs of place and time at the end of sentences.
Foxes usually hunt at night.

Emphasise adverbs of place and time > beginning of sentences.
Do you drive to work on your own every day? No. On Mondays a friend comes with me.

Exercise 1
In each sentence one adverb is in the wrong position. Circle the word and write down the sentence with the adverb in the correct position.

In the wild foxes rarely are aggressive to peole.
