When he arrived at the train station, the train had already left.

He arrived at the train station.

so,

I decided to walk home.

Past Perfect 

had + verb+ed

(irr. verb = had + 3e vorm)

When he arrived at the train station the train had left.

So first the train leaves the station and the he gets there, he's too late to get the train

Therefore the past perfect is what happens before something else in the past

Now you are going to practice the past perfect

Fill in the Past Perfect:
When I walked in, the meeting ___already___ (start).

Fill in the Past Perfect:
