Future tense
There are 4 ways to indicate the future tense:
1. am / is / are going to …..
2. Will/shall
3. Present continuous
4. Present simple
But when do you use them?

(to be) going to & Will/Shall
  • To be going to: gebruik je bij een bestaand plan of als het duidelijk is dat iets gaat gebeuren in zeer korte tijd.
  • We are going to England in April.
  • It’s going to rain soon.
  • Will & Shall: Geeft aan dat iets in de toekomst gaat gebeuren. Kan een voornemen zijn, is niet een bestaand plan.
    • I will /shall go to Spain someday.         
    •   They will see a movie this month.

(to be) going to & Will/Shall
LET OP: Shall = meer formeel - Alleen gebruiken bij I/we.
LET OP: Je moet  “shall” gebruiken bij vragen met I of we als je onderwerp: Shall we go to a concert? When shall I come and visit you?
LET OP: Ontkennende vorm van will wordt meestal “won’t” geschreven. “Will not” alleen gebruiken om nadruk (emphasis) er op te leggen. Je kan ook “shan’t” gebruiken bij I of we, is formeel

Present Continuous and Present Simple

Present Continuous: Gebruik je bij bestaande plannen.
  • I am meeting a friend this evening.
  • Tom and Susan are going to Paris for their honeymoon.

Present Simple: Gebruik je alleen voor de toekomst als er sprake is van aankomst/vertrektijden in het openbaar vervoer, openings/sluitingstijden van winkels en begin/eindtijden van programma’s, scholen, en werk.
  • The train leaves at 8:15 tomorrow morning.
  • The Jumbo closes at 7pm next Tuesday.
