Most of the people were optimistic  at the of the century. But there was trouble brewing. A lot of countries were Nationalistic, that means they were proud of their own culture and country.  Two of the biggest countries, France and Germany allready fought a war between 1870-1871 . After that war Germany became a country, and suddenly there was a mighty militairy  power in the centre of Europe.

New imperialism
  • Imperialism means that European countries tried to conquer as much as they could on other continents.
  • Germany was jalous of the other European countries who had a lot of colonies.

Alliances
  • Countries in Europe made arrangements and deals to help eachother.
  • There were two powerful alliances.
  • The Triple Entante or the Allies. They were Great Britain, France and Russia.
  • The Central Powers. They were Germany, the Austro-Hungarian and the Ottoman empire.

Militairism
  • In most European countries the miltairy had an important role in society.
  • These countries wanted to have the best army possible.
  • Between 1908-1913 there was an arms race. Countries wanted to have more powerfull weapons then their enemies.
