Past Simple
De past simple gebruik je als:
- iets in het verleden is gebeurd en is afgerond.

regelmatige ww --> ww+ed
onregelmatige ww --> 2e rijtje

Past simple vragen en ontkenningen
vragen: To be, to have, to do, can, could, will, would, must & shall 
Dan komt deze vooraan te staan.
Geen hulpwerkwoord?
Dan komt did vooraan in de zin.
Did he watch a movie last week?

Ontkenning: Hulpwerkwoord( to be, to have, to do, can, could, will, would must & shall) komt not achter Hadn’t – weren’t etc.
Geen hulpwerkwoord
Dan komt didn’t tussen het onderwerp en het werkwoord.
He didn’t swim fast.

Past Continuous
De Past Continuous ('ing- vorm') gebruik je:
- als de handeling in de verleden tijd aan de gang was en op een bepaald moment door een andere handeling werd onderbroken;
Voorbeeld: I was screaming while we hit a roadsign

- als twee handelingen tegelijk aan de gang zijn. 
Je maakt deze door was/were + ww+ ing
Voorbeeld: While I was watching TV, I was also preparing my lunch.
