Characterization

How an author creates and develops a character in a story

Helps readers understand what the character is like and why they act a certain way. An author:

- shows their personalities and growth 

- makes them feel real and interesting to the reader

- helps tell the story's message or theme (friendship, fairness, perseverance, etc.)

Characterization: the Warden

1 Hst 1 ‘The Warden owns the shade.’ Wat vertelt deze zin over hoe de Warden leiding geeft aan het kamp?

Characterization: voorbeeld

Chapter 14 "Okay, from now on, I don't want anyone digging anyone else's hole," said the Warden. "And no more reading lessons."

Hoewel de Warden niet veel zegt, laten haar woorden zien dat ze op kille manier de baas is. Haar scherpe toon laat ze voelen dat ze absolute controle heeft. In hoofdstuk 14 geeft ze heldere instructies waarbij ze weinig ruimte laat voor onderhandeling of dat de jongens elkaar helpen. Haar woorden zetten de toon voor een sfeer van onderdrukking waar iedereen aan gehoorzaamt. 

 

De opdracht

Wat: Kies een voorbeeld en beschrijf wat dat je leert over de Warden. Je kunt informatie uit het hele boek gebruiken.

Hoe: Je kijkt wat er staat en schrijft je tekst op je blaadje. Dat lever je straks in. Je bent stil.

Hulp: Ik loop een vast rondje. Vraag? Werk door tot ik bij je ben.

Klaar: schrijf je voorspelling hoe het verhaal verder gaat (schrijf evt hst nummer waar je nu bent). Ga dan verder lezen

2 types of characterization

Direct characterization: the author tells the reader what the character is like. 

Example: "Stanley was overweight and bullied at school. He didn't have any friends at home" (Sachar, Ch. 3)

Indirect characterization: the author shows that the character is like through their speech, thoughts, actions, looks, and how others react to them. 

Example: instead of saying Stanley is kind, the book shows him helping Zero learn to read.
