Predicting: what do you think is the text about?
Skimming: understanding the main idea and concept.
Scanning: look for key information (for example: names, dates, numbers)
Intensive reading: read and understand the complete text.

Skimming
  1. To get the big picture, the global idea
  2. Focus on what the text is about in general
  3. Search for the source (=bron) of your text
  4. Read the first and last paragraph 
  5. Read the first and last line of the other paragraphs 
  6. Skip words you don't know
  7. What are the main items?

Scanning 

  1. Read the title and subheadings (=tussenkopjes)
  2. When you are looking for specific information
  3. Look for keywords that tell you more about what you are looking for in a text
  4. When you find the information you are looking for, read that part more intensely
  5. Look at bold or underlined words or words in italics.

Intensive reading 

  1. Read the complete text, the goal is to understand the text completely
  2. Pay attention to the introduction and subheadings (=tussenkopjes)
  3. Look for the most important sentences and words 
  4. Look up the meaning of difficult words 
  5. Reread challenging paragraphs and read actively

TIPS
  1. First read the QUESTION+ANSWERS, then read the TEXT.
  2. You don't need to know all the words in order to understand a text.
  3. Practice, practice, practice! Skills need to be TRAINED.
