  • Provides all the nutrients you need (carbohydrates, fats, protein, water, minerals & vitamins)
  • Does not contain more energy than you need. 
  • Does not contain a lot of sugar, fat & salt.

Energy
- most food is burned as fuel
-unit of energy is the Joule (j)
-1 kilojoule = 1,000 joules
-can also measure in calorie (cal)
- I kilocalorie = 1,000 cal
1 kcal = 4.2 kJ

-depends on gender, age, body size, exercise, climate, season
-examples:
  1. sleeping = 4.2kJ per min
  2. walking = 16.7 kJ per min
  3. jogging = 29.3kJ per min
  4. climbing stairs = 46.1 kJ/m
