What are conditionals?
  • A sentence that is made up of an if-clause (condition) and a main clause (result) 
  • We also call them 'if sentences'
  • Describes a situation that might happen or might have happened
  • There are 4 types of conditionals and they are made using different English verb tenses.

Zero Conditional

  • Real factual situations
  • if + present simple, ... present simple
  • e.g. If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.
  • If it rains, the soil gets wet

First conditional
  • Possible future action
  • if + present simple, ... will + infinitive

    Example: 
    If it rains tomorrow, we'll go to the cinema

  • If you like warm weather, you will like Florida or California.
  • If you go to California, you'll be able to go to great beaches.
  • if you go by plane, it will take about 6 hours.

  • Unreal, improbable situations
  • if + past simple, .... would + infinitive
  • If I won the lottery, I would buy a mansion

  • Unreal past situations
