Je gebruikt de past continuous i.c.m. de past simple om aan te geven dat er iets gebeurde (korte actie = past simple) terwijl er al iets aan de gang was (lange actie = past continuous).

Conditionals


Conditionals zijn voorwaardelijke zinnen: als ..... , dan ......
Een conditional sentence bestaat uit twee delen, een hoofdzin en een zinsdeel met if.

First Conditional
Vorm: bij de first conditional gebruik je verschillende tijden in de twee zinsdelen. Bij if gebruik je de Present Simple en in het andere zinsdeel will + een werkwoord.

Gebruik: als het best waarschijnlijk is dat iets gaat gebeuren, nu of in de toekomst.

5.2 First Conditional
You can use the first conditional to predict future results of  actions. 
ACTION                                                FUTURE RESULT
If + present simple                                will/won't + verb

If he works hard for 5 more weeks, he will pass his exams.
If the pandemic ends, Mrs Rost will go to the US.
What happens if the sentence is the other way around? So starting with the main clause instead of the subordinate clause?
