RELATIVE CLAUSES
Een relative clause zegt - net als een adjective - iets over een zelfstandig naamwoord:
  • An interesting chap. (adjective)
  • You mean that chap that looked so interesting? (relative clause)

Een clause (bijzin) geeft meer informatie over wie/wat bedoeld wordt.

Een clause (bijzin) geeft meer informatie over wie/wat bedoeld wordt.

The man who was arrested yesterday proved to be a cyberthief.
geeft antwoord op de vraag 'welke man'.

The youngsters who found love on the internet are getting married.
geeft antwoord op de vraag 'welke jongeren'.

RELATIVE CLAUSES
In een relative clause gebruiken we who om nadere informatie te geven over een of meerdere personen in plaats van he, she of they:

  • The man - he caused the accident - was crossing the street
  • The man who caused the accident was crossing the street. 

In de meeste gevallen kun je in plaats van who ook that gebruiken. Er zijn een paar uitzonderingen

In een relative clause gebruiken we which of that om nadere informatie te geven over een of meerdere dingen:

  • They hadn't seen Spielberg's film. It won 8 Oscars.
  • They hadn't seen Spielberg's film which won 8 Oscars.

  • What has happened to the books? They were on this shelf.
  • What has happened to the books which/that were on this shelf?

Je kan niet overal that gebruiken:
  • Which kan verwijzen naar een hele zin. Het betekent dan 'and this
All of of a sudden it started raining, which (= and this) was very annoying.
  • What kan betekenen 'the thing(s) that
What (= the things that) we saw were horrific

RELATIVE CLAUSES: WHO
Het woord WHO verandert in bepaalde gevallen van vorm (naamvallen):
  • Als de functie in de zin het onderwerp is (1ste naamval): who
The Scottish film star who won an Oscar recently is coming to London.
  • Als er sprake is van een bezitsrelatie (2de naamval): whose
The man whose house was burgled last night is going to be interviewed.
  • Als de functie in de zin meewerkend voorwerp is (3de naamval): to whom, who ... to
This letter is from the girl who/to whom you gave that book the other day
  • Als de functie in de zin het lijdend voorwerp is (4de naamval): who
There's the lad who the police arrested for shoplifting.
