When studying the irregular verbs we study 3 tenses (tijden).

1: Base form
2: past simple
3: past participle (voltooid deelwoord)

You can use the Irregular Verbs in the same three ways as the regular verbs!

The Irregular Verbs  don't follow the rules as we have learned them. 

# consonant changes     (I bend, I bent, I have bent)
# consonant added         (I mean, I meant, I meant)
    consonant added + change in vowel sound 
                                              (I keep, I kept, I have kept)
# vowel changes              (I fly, I flew, I have flown)
# change in word             (I go, I went, I have gone)
# don't change at all       (I hit, I hit, I have hit)
# ought/aught                  (I buy, I bought, I have bought)

# there are over 200 of them!
As said: 
The past tense in English comes in past simple (verleden tijd) and past particible (voltooid deelwoord).

As said: 
The past tense in English comes in past simple (verleden tijd) and past particible (voltooid deelwoord).

When the base form has an a in it: use -aught. 
No a? then -ought!
teach -> taught
think -> thought

Net als in het Nederlands is het voltooid deelwoord nooit het enige werkwoord in een zin. 

verleden tijd: De vaas brak. => The vase broke.
voltooid dw: De vaas IS gebroken. => The vase IS broken.
