Vladek fights in the war and is taken prisoner by the Nazis and has to work as as a prisoner of war in a camp. Later it was announced that workers could "volunteer for labor assignments to replace German workers called to the front" (p. 56) He signs up and was taken somewhere else. Even though they now could sleep in tents and had slightly more to eat, he was forced to do hard manual labour. The Jews were mistreated and abused by the Nazis.

Reich = Nazi Germany, officially known as the German Reich until 1943 and Greater German Reich from 1943 to 1945, was the German state between 1933 and 1945, when Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party controlled the country which they transformed into a dictatorship.
