The Romans conquer Greece. This is the official end of the Greeks, now they became Romans.
Kingdom
Rome was founded as city-state with a
monarchy
as form of government. They had a king.
They deposed the last king in 509 BC. Sadly, we know less about this period of the Roman empire.
Republic
They no longer wanted the power to lie with one person ->
republic
. Controlling themselves. The power is devided into multiple positions.
Empire
They had a
emperor
as their leader.
The first emperor was Octavian -> emperor Augustus.

The Roman kingdom
Romulus became the first king (out of 7).
Rome: built on 7 hills, Tiber River nearby. City-state.
Easy to defend + the river made it easy to trade.
The last king (
Etruscan
) was Tarquin
Superbus
(
Tarquin the Proud
).
Was a tyrant > in 509 BC Brutus led a revolt against him.
They never wanted a king to rule again.

Roman people
Patricians
= Nobles, rich families, powerful.
Could be part of the
Senate
.
Plebeians
= the 'others' (except slaves), not so powerful. Wanted to make sure their needs were met.
Plebeian assembly
> chose the
people's tribune
.
They protected the plebeians + could
veto
a law.
Veto
Latin for: I forbid it.
Even if the whole room wanted to accept a certain law, if the people's tribune didn't agree, the law wouldn't go through.
They could make sure that no laws that would be bad for the plebeians came through.
