Skeleton
The presence of a skeleton, and where it is located, is a characteristic for animals. They can have no skeleton/hydrostatic skeleton, a exoskeleton (skeleton is on the outside) or endoskeleton.

Moulting
Arthropods have a exoskeleton, but they can still grow. This means they can grow out of their ''skin'', and they need to exit it. This is called moulting.
An exoskeleton is made out of chitin, which is both strong and flexible.
