Past simple (+): meaning & use

If something happened (and ended) in the past, we use the past simple.

For the past simple, we use the "verb + ed"

I talked to John yesterday.

We worked on a science project two days ago.

He complained about it just now.

1. Verb ending in 'e' = only add '-d'

2. Verb with consonant + y = remove 'y' and add '-ied'

3. Verb with vowel + y =  add '-ed'

4. Verbs ending in 1  vowel and 1 consonant = 2x consonant

5. Two+ syllables & ends in 'L' = double the 'L'

I live in New York > I lived in New York.

I try to talk often > I tried to talk to him.

I play guitar every day > I played guitar a lot.

I clap > I clapped

We travel > We travelled

Jennifer ______ (to stop) working at the power plant last year.
