Learning outcomes
- You know what types of polders there are and that there are misunderstandings about safety.
- You understand why the flood risk in the Lower Netherlands is increasing and how the coast is protected against it.
- You know about and understand climate adaptation measures.

Water myths

Slide 5 - Slide

How do we protect our country?
  • Dyke ring: in the Netherlands there is an area that is protected against external water by a primary flood defense (dykes) or by high ground.
  • The Netherlands is divided into a large number of dike rings. If a dyke ring were to flood, the other dyke rings would remain dry.

Slide 6 - Slide

Polders in all shapes and sizes
Polder = a piece of land surrounded by dikes in which the water level can be artificially regulated.
There are 4 types of polders in the Netherlands:
1. Sea polders
2. Peat polders
3. Reclaimed lake floors
4. IJselmeer polders

Polders in all shapes and sizes

Lower Netherlands has four types of polders:
IJsselmeer polder
Seapolders                                 Peat polders                     Reclaimed lake floors

Threats on the coast

Why does sea level continue to rise?

Slide 12 - Slide

1. Global warming
2. Storm surges
-> foredune is knocked away.
important coastal defense. The row of dunes that are directly adjacent to a coast (Sea defense dune), often with marram grass.

Slide 13 - Slide

How do we deal with these threats?

Slide 14 - Slide

1. Suffering from coastal erosion, so dunes must be reinforced: sand replenishment.
2. Dynamic coastal management: nature takes its course.
3. A dynamic system due to ebb and flood: when the sea level rises, extra sediment is supplied.

Slide 15 - Slide

What can you do about it?
Climate change cannot be stopped. But we can:
Climate adaptation (room for the rivers, more water storage capacity in cities, better drainage of water, more water retention to bridge dry periods)

Slide 17 - Drag question

Een dijkring is
A

Slide 18 - Quiz

Wat is het voordeel van dijkringen?
A
Je hoeft daardoor niet meer te letten op de waterveiligheid
B
Als de ene dijkring zou overstromen, gaat niet gelijk de andere dijkring overstromen
C
Je kan water van dijkring naar dijkring sturen
D
Je hoeft minder dijken aan te leggen
