De / Het = The

Je gebruikt "the" als je  naar iets specifieks verwijst:

The new bikes are great. 

Bikes are great.

Voor bepaalde gebouwen: 

+ the: je bent slechts op bezoek

I am at the prison.

I am at the school.

- zonder "the": je werkt daar of je hebt daar een bepaalde functie 

I am in prison. ( gevangene)

I am at school. ( leraar, leerling etc)

Een = a, an

An gebruik je wanneer het woord in de uitspraak begint met een klinker:

An hour (a), An apple, An umbrella (a), An orange (o)

A gebruik je wanneer het woord in de uitspraak begint met een medeklinker:

A  holiday (h), A boy, A university ( ju), A  one-way(wan)
