The modals
  • Permission (toestemming - MAG) --> CAN
  • Obligation (verplichting - MOET) --> MUST
  • Prohibition (verbod - MAG NIET) --> MUSTN'T (MUST NOT) and CAN'T ( CAN NOT)
  • Absence of obligation (geen verplichting - HOEFT NIET) --> NEEDN'T - DON'T HAVE TO
  • Advice (advies, raadgeving - ZOU MOETEN) --> SHOULD
  • Ability ( in staat zijn te ... - KUNNEN) --> CAN
  • Possibility (het is mogelijk dat ... ) --> MAY

Examples
