Energy
Energy is needed for survival and is used for
  • Building new cells
  • Movement
  • Heat

Food webs show sources of energy for different organisms.
Digestion breaks down the food into smaller molecules.
Respiration is the process of getting the energy from these molecules.
Combustion is the process of burning something.
TB P.76-77

Slide 11 - Slide

What is energy not used for?

Slide 15 - Quiz

iubioub
Aerobic respiration
Aerobic respiration is combustion with oxygen

The formula is:

glucose + oxygen โ†’ carbon dioxide + water + energy

Do you remember the chemical formulas for these substances?

TB P.76-77

Slide 16 - Slide

iubioub
Anaerobic respiration
Anaerobic respiration is combustion without oxygen in our muscles

The formula is:

glucose โ†’ lactic acid + energy

Do you remember the chemical formulas for these substances?

TB P.76-77

Slide 17 - Slide

Slide 18 - Slide

iubioub
Anaerobic respiration
Anaerobic respiration has disadvantages:
  • It gives you far less energy.
  • It creates lactic acid , which can cause cramps.
  • It creates an oxygen debt.

After exercising you will still breathe hard (panting), this extra oxygen is needed to break down the lactic acid built up in your muscles. This is called oxygen debt

TB P.76-77

Fermentation
Fermentation is anaerobic respiration that takes place in
plants, fungi & bacteria.

The formula is:

glucose โ†’ alcohol + carbon dioxide + energy

This type of respiration is used to make beer and wine. But also foods like bread, yogurt and sauerkraut.
