(2) The new boats have a new type of periscope, which is a tool that lets sailors see above water when their submarine is under it.

Slide 18 - Slide

(3) Lockheed Martin, the company that makes the submarines, built a controller for the US Navy that cost almost £30,000. However, the sailors weren’t very impressed. ‘It’s kind of awkward in your hand,’ said Lt. Kyle Leonard. In conclusion, it doesn’t work very well. Thankfully, they found a solution … an Xbox 360 controller. Yep, just like the one you might have at home.

(4) The manufacturer explains that because sailors were used to gaming it only took ‘minutes’ for them to learn to use the new system. One other benefit is that sailors ‘can go to any video game store and get an Xbox controller anywhere in the world, so it makes for an easy replacement’. The USS Colorado will be the first boat to have the controller when it enters the water in November 2017.

Because the ... freshwater habitat.
(1) The American alligator is known to be a sneaky and brutal hunter that eats anything it can catch. Because the reptile has no salt glands, scientists always believed that its diet was limited to the fish and shellfish that live in its freshwater habitat. Now, a new study suggests that the resourceful beasts also gobble down saltwater creatures like crabs, sea turtles, stingrays, and even sharks.
