The Dutch were the first Europeans to find Australia in 1606. In 1616, the famous sailor Dirk Hartog went there. Australia was called ‘New Holland’ for a long time. It was also called Terra Australis in written documents (geschreven documenten). This means ‘Southern land’ in Latin. 200 years later, the English officially called it Australia.
