Formative vs Summative assessment
Formative assessment:
A formative assessment is like a practice assessment. You will be mostly confident in carrying out the service, but there may be small areas you need to focus on in order to reach summative assessment (timings, sectioning etc…)

Summative assessment:
A summative assessment is a graded practical assessment (pass, merit, distinction). You will only undertake this is your tutor feels you are ready. You only have ONE chance to achieve a graded assessment. If you fail, the subsequent assessment will only be a pass.

This is the number that relates to the formative or summative assessment comepleted. 
For example the first assessment you complete will be Number 1 and will continue in DATE order.

Analyse your clients hair. 
Is thier hair course (thick), medium or fine? Tick the correct one.
Is their hair Straight (T1), Wavy (T2), Curly (T3), Very Curly (T4) ? TIck the correct one.
Look at your clients hair. Tick all the apply.
Analyse your clients scalp. Tick the correct one. 

Normal - Will look white in colour, no redness, no flaking or excess oil. 
Dry - Can be itchy or falking.
Dandruff affected - Will apear falky, dry and can be yellow. 
Oily - Can look wet and oily. Ask your client when they last washed thier hair.
Product build up - Can look flat and dull and feel as if the hair has a coating on it.
Look and feel your clients hair - Ask them questions about their haircare and tick all that apply. 

Chemically Damaged - Hair that is damaged from chemicals.
Heat Damaged - Hair that is damaged from us of heated tools. 
Normal - Hair that has no damage at all. 
Enviromentally Damaged - Hair that has damage from the enviroment (sun, wind, sea)
Product build up - Hair that has a coating on from product. Can look dull and flat.
Face shape: 

Look at your clients face shape. The shape of your clients face will determine the cut, shape and style you recommend. 

Research these face shapes to find out more. 
You can use the print outs in the salon to help guide you.
Analyse your clients hair and ask them questions: 

Virgin hair - No colour present on the hair at all. Completly natural. 
Coloured hair - Hair has been previously coloured and this is present on the hair now. 
Permed hair - Hair that has been previously permed and is present on the hair. 
Bleached - Hair that has been previously bleached and is still present on the hair. 
Ask your client what their lifestyle is. This will help you determine what styles to suggest to your client.

Hair tests: 

These must be carried out before all services.

Elasticity test is carried out before ALL services. 

This test will tell you how strong the cortex is (internal layer of the hair) 

This is carried out by: 
- Taking a few strands of hair
- Spraying these with a water spray
- Gently strech the hairs and look to see if it returns to is original shape. 

If the hair bounces back - This means the hair is healthy and not internally damaged. 
If the hair does not bounce back - This means the hair is internally damaged.

A porosity test is carried out before ALL services. 

This test will check how porous the hair is by assessing the cuticle scales (outer layer of the hair). 

To carry out this test:
- Take a few stands of DRY hair
- Run your fingers up the hair shaft 
- Take note if this feels rough and bumpy or smooth. 

If the hair feel rough and bumpy, the cuticle layers are damaged and the hair is going to absorb more water and product. 
If the hair is smooth, this means the hair is not externally damaged and the hair is healthy.

Incompatibility test: 

This this only needs to be carried out before a colour or perm service if you suspect your client has metalic salts on the hair. 

Metalic salts can be present if the hair is damaged, if the client is using shop brought colours or products. 

Question your client to find out about their home hair care routine. 

To carry out an incompatability test: 
  1. Take a small test cutting from the hair 
  2. Mix up 40ml of 6% LIQUID peroxide and 20 mls (6 drops) of perm loton.
  3. Place the test cutting in the solution and leave from up to 30 mins
  4. Check to see if the solution is bubbling, fizzing or letting off heat
  5. Take the test strand out and do an elasticity test on the hair.

A skin test is needed before all colouring services. 

You should check your clients record card to check that they have had their skin test. 

You should question your client about their skin test to check they did not have a reaction.
A colour test is carried during a colouring service. This will allow you to see if the colour is fully devloped and ready to be removed.
When completing tests, you should write all the test outcomes here. Make sure it is clear.
Contra-indications are anything can influence or stop the service. 

You must ask your client all of these questions.
You client MUST sign here to show you have spoken about any contra-indications.
This area is used for you to record your timings for your service. 

You must break these timings down into units. For example a shampoo, cut and blowdry service might look like this: 

204 (shampoo) - 10.00 - 10.15 
206 (cut) - 10.20 - 11.00
209 (blowdry) - 11.00 - 11.45 
Total time - 1 hour 45 mins

These are the techniques you will be using to set the hair in the desired way. 

For example - If you are doing a  dry set with heated rollers you would potentially cover the following:

Dressing techniques: 

Dressing out is done when the hair is dry and being styled into the final look. Tick ALL techniques that you will use.
Products: 

Tick ALL products you will be using during your styling service.

Tick the correct percentage of white hair present on your clients hair.

TIP - Make sure you check around the whole head as there might be less underneath but more around the hairline.
Tick and write the peroxide used. 

Quasi developer - Used with all quasi colours and toners
3% (10 vol) - Used to add depth and tone
6% (20 vol) - Used for 100% of white coverage. Can be used to create 1 level of lift on natural hair.
9% (30 vol) - 2 levels of lift on natural hair.
12% (40 vol) - 3 levels of lift on natural hair.
Once you have spoken to your tutor about your clients hair, you need to make sure you get your tutor to sign here. 

This will allow you to get yorur colour mixed up. 
Natural base shade - This is your clients NATURAL colour present on their hair. 

Use your colour chart to help you identify this.
Artifical colour - This is any/ all artifical colour on your clients hair. 

TIP - There is sometimes more than one colour present. It is important that you find ALL colours present.
Target shade - This is the colour your client would like to achieve. 

You will only know this by showing your client colour swatches or looking for inspritation photos.
Processing time - This is how long your colour needs to process.  
You MUST follow the Manufacturer instructions. 
Mixing ratio: 

This is the most important part!! This will tell your tutor what colour you are mixing up and how much. 

Most permanent colours are mixed to a 1:1 ratio. You must write the mixing ratio out in full! 

For example: 

30 mls of 6nn + 30 mls of 6% peroxide.

Perming products used. 

Tick all products that you have used during your perm. 

You MUST state which perm lotion you are using - Including development time. 
Tick the correct perm wind you will carry out during your perm service. 

You need to complete a through consultation to help you identify this.

- Clients should have the correct PPE on. 
- You MUST keep your work area tidy throughout the service.

- Any shampoo or product that gets in the eyes must be rinsed with eye wash, report it to a member of staff.

Effleurage massage is a gentle stroking movement. It is used to apply and distribute shampoo and conditioner to the hair.

HOW TO PREFORM:
Rotary is a firm, fast circular movement using the pads of fingers over the scalp. 
BENEFIT TO CLIENT:
Stimulates the blood supply to the scalp, relaxing.

Friction 
WHEN IS IT USED:
 During shampooing
HOW TO PREFORM:
Friction is a vigorous rubbing movement using the finger pads. It is only done for a few minutes working from the front to back of the head. 
REASON FOR USE AND BENEFITS:
Stimulates the sebaceous glands and blood flow because of the quick, firm movements. Only carried out on dry scalps. 

Must not be used on clients with oily scalps!!!!!!!

Petrissage
WHEN IS IT USED:
During conditioning
HOW TO PREFORM:
Petrissage is a slow, firm, deep, circular kneading movement. The idea of the massage is to move the scalp, not your hands. Not to be used on oily scalps.
REASONS AND BENEFITS:
Relaxing end to the shampoo and conditioning service. Stimulates the sebaceous glands and blood flow.

Sectioning of the hair 
Before sectioning we recommend 'rough' drying the hair first, this is a quick blast to remove excess water. The hair should be roughly 40-50% dry. 
When we carry out most hairdressing services we section the hair into 4 sections.
These can be known as:

They used to be referred to as a “hot cross bun” sectioning pattern, but this term is rarely used now.
