Adjectives (bijvoeglijk naamwoorden) say something about nouns (zelfstandig naamwoorden).​

After some verbs, you can never use an adverb. These are often verbs that are connected to senses: Look, seem, taste, feel, smell, sound, be​, etc.

To keep it simple: 

Adjectives (bijvoegelijk naamwoorden) answer the question WHAT? 

Adverbs (bijwoorden) answer the question HOW?

She sang beautifully! 

How did she sing? --> beautifully

Adverb

That is a .......... bear (big)

You did ...... on your test (good)

The bus was ............ late (extreme)
