In het oude Ierland was het niet ongewoon om ritueel mensen te offeren. Na het offer werden de lichamen gedumpt in veenmoerassen. De bijzondere eigenschappen van het veen hebben ervoor gezorgd dat deze lichamen zeer goed bewaard bleven, waardoor zelfs de aangebrachte wonden in het lichaam nog te zien zijn.
Er werden al honderden veenlichamen (of delen van) in Ierland teruggevonden. 
De Cashel Man, die in 2011 in de buurt van Portlaoise werd ontdekt en met een leeftijd van meer dan 4000 jaar het oudste Europese moeraslichaam is dat ooit is gevonden met een intacte huid; Old Croghan Man uit Co.
